How The West Was Won
May 10 - June 10, 2025
J. Alexander Gallery
1089 Magnolia Ave.
Beaumont, TX
Opening Reception: May 10 at 6:00 pm
My current work, “How the West Was Won,” is a direct correlation between where I grew up on the prairie in Kansas, a few miles from the Oregon and Chisholm Trails, and the folk stories of “The Great Western Migration.”
I incorporate 'Western' motifs and iconography in my casted forms. These elements serve as metaphors for industrialization and 'Manifest Destiny,' as I explore the complexities of Western Expansion. My narrative is also influenced by Indigenous cultures and I reflect on their stories, and aim to create a dialogue between my work and their rich heritage.
I use thick glazes, pottery shards, sand, dirt, and other found materials to cover and transform the pristine forms. My intent is to highlight the significant consequence this migration had on the demographics, ecology, economics, and politics shaping the United States into its modern form.
